Police Detain Two Over Alleged Religious Insult at Jakarta Music Festival

KILAS INFO ■ JAKARTA — Indonesian police have detained two people over an alleged religious insult linked to a promotion for alcoholic drinks at a music festival in North Jakarta, police said on Wednesday.
The two, identified only by the initials R, a woman, and E, a man, were detained after a video circulated on social media showing a promotional challenge at The Sounds Project music festival in Ancol.
Police said the challenge offered free alcoholic drinks to festival visitors who could recite Surah Ad-Duha, a chapter of the Quran.
North Jakarta Police acting chief Commissioner Oki Waskito said investigators would soon conduct a case review to determine whether the matter should be formally investigated.
"The event had obtained the necessary permits. Nevertheless, we are continuing to examine the alleged criminal offence that occurred during the event," Oki said.
Police are examining the case under provisions of Articles 300 or 301 of Indonesia's new Criminal Code, Oki said.
The case emerged after footage of the promotion, involving a Newport stand at the festival, spread widely on social media.
Police have not announced whether the two people will face charges. The investigation will determine whether the available evidence meets the requirements for further legal proceedings. (Rasyid M)
